Chapter 26: Protective Spells [Dharani]

The Dharanis [protective spells recited in this chapter] indicate Nam Myoho Renge Kyo. The reason is that dharanis are the secret words of Buddhas. The five characters of Myoho Renge Kyo are the most secret words of all Buddhas throughout the three existences. Now the chanting of Nam Myoho Renge Kyo by Nichiren and his disciples is the spreading of dharanis because it works to thwart evil and uphold good. (Gosho Zenshu p. 777)

The sutra states, "World honored One! I too think compassionately of living beings and shield and guard these teachers of the Law and therefore I pronounce these supernatural spells [dharanis]." (LS p. 309, 3LS p. 330)

The vows of the four heavenly kings [in this chapter] to protect the sutra's votaries 'exist in our own life.' (Gosho Zenshu p. 778)
